how can I change the name of the "home" link
The top directory as linked on the web pages is named "Home". Is there a way to change the name of that link to something more reflective of the site?

I think you can change it by going to: Build > User Language and then selecting the Links(4) option and then change the LINKS_TOP value to whatever you want it to be.
