I want to break up my glinks setup to be more like google, allow users to search the directory, images, news, etc. What would be the best way to set this up?

The simplest way would probably be to add a field to the Links (and categories) for "type"
Then, when allowing users to search, use a hidden (or select) field for "type" that would limit the scope based on the content of your link.
That would require virtually no additional coding, just some template changes, and updates to your links to identify each link as to basic type.
