Scumware Ideas Needed
Hi everyone,
With the prolifiration of scumware such as TopText that is hidden in the #3 CNET download KaZaA, how can we stop this program from sending our viewers over to their ad sites?
For example, if you have the word MUSIC on your site this program would highlight it in yellow (or green if it was Surf+) and become an active hyperlink to BMG music.

Currently all I can find is to automatically refresh the page as the viewer enters.

This is much worse than "Smart Links" that MS was going to package into their software but decided to remove it due to the pressure they were getting.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks for pointing out the other discussion. I looked last night and did not find it.

I did review the info there and it seems that there is still not an answer. This issue will only get worse because of Fotino, Surf+ and others that are doing the same. And the huge W3C product called Amaya that will not only deface it will modify that actual text!

This is a very scary issue for all of you that have large site and forums especially and deserves a lot of firepower to figure a way to stop them without harming your own site by forcing reloads, etc...

Ok,

HTML is sent as TEXT. That was it's benefit. It made it cross platform compatible. Now, with people trying to 'jack your content, the only solution would be to use a Java server, send the content encrypted, have a Java applet decode it, and present it to your browser. This defeats the purpose of the whole HTML/Internet concept, and of course, someone would eventually figure out a way to 'jack the codes being sent from the Java module to the browser, but they wouldn't be able to break the encrypted stream.

What it comes down to, really, is a way to keep your content clean. Users who install this sort of software, are now destroying their own surfing experience, and being bombarded with MORE ads, rather than less.

I'm sure there will be a consortium of site owners to combat this, and an equally agressive thrust to keep your content streams clean.

The economy is bad, and going to get worse, and when that happens, people feel that 'stealing' and being immoral is OK, so this will only increase. What they don't realize, selfishly, is that by doing it, they destroy the goose that lays the golden eggs, and everyone suffers.

There is no easy answer, but I'm sure there will be solutions to specific problems as time goes on.

The biggest, would be a utility downloadable from your site, that would "clean out" your browser, so users got the true experience.
