Popularity system based on category?

Popularity system based on category?
I was wondering if anyone has ever thought of implementing a popularity system based on category? It would be very useful for large directories/search engines since some categories are obviously more popular than others, making a popularity ranking based on the entire database no sense. What people really would like to see are the most popular sites in a given category, whether that particular category is popular or not.

Has anyone ever thought of this before? If so, where could I go to find out how to do this? I think it would be an invaluable way to make sure your best links stick to the top, without having to use comment tags or something like that to do it artificially.

Optionally, has anyone ever developed an "editor's choice" mod? Basically each link in the database would just have an option to determine whether or not it would appear at the top of the category, and possibly at the top of a search request because an editor has given the link special status. I know that you can artificially inflate the popularity status, but then you have to constantly monitor the hits. It would be nice to be able to give a link special status, which would overide all other ranking criteria.

All this was done for the 1.x versions.

To do the cool by category, you added a search and tag to the main build of each category -- similar to a featured links modification. The problem is that many categories do not have enough links to make all the various sub-cool pages meaningful. In a large directory where the # of links far outweighs the # of categories it might be useful. But in general, it's a site-specific type of modification. I don't know of any mod that had built just a cool-page of cool-pages.

The other mods are done. The "priority" mod does all that. It causes certain links to rise to the top of certain categories. What you call the mod doesn't matter, the process and effect is the same.

Just remember... 1.x mods will _not_ work with the 2.0 SQl version without major (usually) modification! The entire logic has been reworked.
