i need to manualy password protect my admin. Exactly which directory needs to be password protected?

Only the "admin" and directories below it need to be protected.
Putting an .htaccess file in that directory will protect those below.
Or, you can do the same in a <directory> block in your Apache set up. But, just the 'admin' and those below it are in need of protection. Everything else needs to be publically acessible.
