I am trying to get a list of the top level categories in a vertical list on my home.html and category.html templates. This would be a menu that is on the left side of the template and would be consistent across all the pages.

I have tried every variation of the loop command etc. but cannot get it to work.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have been playing with it for hours now!
