How do i remove build_index from urls?

How do i remove build_index from urls?
I would like to have urls like:

www.sitename.com/directory1/ instead of www.sitename.com/directory1/index.html where build_index = index.html
How can i disable adding build_index at the end of url?

This currently isn't possible, but it's on our todo list.
