DMOZ import

DMOZ import
Greetings!

I just imported the content.rdf.u8.gz from dmoz but I can't seem to open it with any zip utility. Keeps saying that the file is corrupt. Strange thing with the import: dmoz said that the file size was 175MB, but after downloading it to my PC it was over 900MB. Anyone experience this recently?

If you are unzipping it on your PC, it should be about 150Mb, and unzip to 900Mb. If it says it is corrupt, it could genuinly be corrupt, or it could be your program. I've used WinZip fine to open it before.

If not, try unzipping it on your server by typing: gzip -d content.rdf.u8.gz. That will uncompress it, please not it may take a couple of minutes, its 900Mb remember!

Hope that helps.

The compressed .gz file itself was 900MB! I did use Winzip to try and uncompress it, but it gave me the corrupt message. I also tried downloading some other smaller files and I got the same message. I must be doing something wrong. Does DMOZ have an FTP site for these files? The way I download it now is just right click on the file name and save to my HD.

Why are you trying to save you your PC? Are you intending to use it to do DMOZ imports? If so, download contrent.tar.u8.gz from http://dmoz.org/rdf/content.rdf.u8.gz. Simply download this from your computer (I think you can type it in your browser window, and then it will come up with a download box). Simply download that file (about 170Mb), and then decompress on your computer.

Hope that helps Tongue

That's exactly what I'm doing Unsure Is there a way to import it from DMOZ straight to my server using Telnet?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi,

Don't worry, what happened is that your browser downloaded the full uncompressed file which is 930MB but it kept the gz extension so infact the file is already uncompressed.

You can leave it as is or just edit the file name and remove the .gz if it makes you feel better :)
