Build only selected set of categories
Hi all,
I want to build a selected set of categories and not all of them...
Can i do that with the 3 options for build provided...
to be honest donno exactly what does Build staggered and build changed do.. does any one know ?

I do not believe there is an option to select what is built and what is not. Build staggered builds a little at a time, build changed will build home, new, cool, etc, but not every category page; build all... self explanatory.

Why would you want to build only certain categories? I have never found a reason you would want to do this unless you want to use some with page.cgi and some without (reasoning a crazy mind would use).

Just curious...

I am using the html pages generated out of categories and hosting them as intermediate pages for the main web site pages.
So at times i get a requirement such as to alter only some specific pages and not all such intermediate pages, changes like the data shown on the page or else...
in which case i just alter a certain set of categories and only want them to be build and not all cause for all to be built i ll again have to wait for 50 minutes cause i have a lot of categories in the db.
Now i have started using Build changed, thanks to you.
You said build staggerred builds a little at a time, Does it build all the categories alphabeticall, just like Build all ? what will happen if i use it for the above mentioned requirement, is it better than Build changed ? So far build changed helps but just in case if i make changes to global templates only then build changed does not help does it ?

As far as I'm aware, there's no standard functionality in Links SQL 2.x that supports this.

It would require some sort of mod which involves adding a build_category field to the Categories table and then referencing this in nph-build.cgi/Build.pm so the category is not built.

You may also need to modify the category or subcategory template to not display subcategories at that level otherwise you will get broken category page links.

The work around which i have done for the time being is to run an update statement updating the Has_Changed_Links field in the category table from yes to no and from no to yes everytime i make certain changes to templates or globals and then use build changed for building the pages.... works fine but have to see if there are any side effects ...
