Bug with Weights - Links 2.0.3
Hi,

I am trying to set up Links 2.0.3 to search category titles only. I tried to do this by removing all the weights from Database > Links > Properties but this is where I found the bug.

Basically, after setting the title, URL and description of the Links to zero, I re-built the entire site. I then did a search and it still matched titles, URLs and descriptions!?? That is really weird. I double checked the weights and they were still zero! What's going on? Why is it sill searching these fields when their weights are zero? I just want Links to search category names only.

Try removing the 0 to leave the field blank.

Hi,

When you add 0 it turns up blank anyway. I have tried both entering a 0 and leaving it blank - the problem occurs either way. Is there an email to report bugs to GT?

Oops, forgot to add that you must re-index the search index table after making changes to any search weights.

Other than that, the suport form is at http://gossamer-threads.com/scripts/support/

As pointed out, you _must_ reindex the site after weights are changed.

It would be nice, if Alex added this automatic reminder as a bell/whistle on a future upgrade. You don't want to automatically re-index, as that can kill a site, especially during peak times, but the webmaster should be reminded that _must_ be done to have changes accepted.

I am missing something here? Where is "re-index" in the menus? I have found "rebuild search" but not re-index. Please explain where it is. At the moment the method of removing the weights has not worked.

Rebuild search is the same as the old re-index.

But, if you are still having problems, go into the setup->sql options area and click the "resync def files" the third radio button on the bottom. It is the one that DOESN'T destroy you data, but resyncs the files if changes have been made out side links. Sometimes you need to do that.

Then, repair your tables, just for the heck of it.

And then rebuild the search.

That should work.

As Hunter said, "Works for me.".

Pugdog,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I did exactly what you recommended before I posted this thread (I tried my best first otherwise I'd get told off :-))

Anyway, I did it all again and it still doesn't work.

When I rebuilt the search I get:
Code:

Indexing Links Database ... No search weights have been defined, skipping!

Reindexing Category Database ... 676 categories.

Done!
This is why it must be a bug - because Links confirms that there are no weights, but then still searches on those fields. I have also tried to "block" all the fields in the Setup > Search area but that doesn't work either.

It's going to be a long weekend - please help.

Where is your site?

I don't think Links has a default to return links if nothing is selected. Has to be something else, although you could probably test this out by giving the "date" fields a weight of 1, and seeing if that works.

Pugdog,

I have tried adding '1' to the Date's weighting but still having the problem. I have set you up with a username and password to access the site and will email it to you right now. Please don't publish the URL online as it is development.

Thanks

Hi,

Either Alex or Pugdog have now fixed this by adding a weight of '1' to the "Add Date" field in Links > Properties. Don't try adding a weight to "Date Checked" as I had previously tried this and it didn't work.

So thanks for your help and I hope this solution will be useful for other users. Now if someone could help me with the numbered links hack then that would be great - http://gossamer-threads.com/p/127425
