Alt Display Name for Categories

Alt Display Name for Categories
Is it possible to have Category links display a different text
on the pages, than the Category it links to and displays as url?

Example:
I have a Category named "Bands & Musicians".
It displays in the url as "Bands___Musicians".
It displays on my pages as "Bands & Musicians".

I would like my pages to "Display" the words "Bands & Musicians", and have the
category named "Bands" so urls are better. Sounds simple, but I would bet a dollar it isn't.

Currently I get urls like:
www.supportmusicians.com/Bands___Musicians/Alternative/index.html

I would like:
www.supportmusicians.com/Bands/Alternative/index.html
With "Bands" being the actual name of the category, but when
creating hyper-links, use "Bands & Musicians" as the Display text.

If the Category table simply had a "Display" name, it would be easy to
create url's that link to the category and that "display" whatever text I want.

So, if it is possible to do without writting or buying a plugin, let me know how.
My alternative is to simply name my category without the "&" to "Bands".
But my issue is that I also have "Lights & Sound", so you get the idea.
This functionality is pretty basic, and should be avail out-of-the-box IMHO.

Thanks for any help,
Chris

Have you tried the StaticURLtr plugin? You could use that to change the url to look a little nicer (eg. & => and). It's a free plugin I wrote, available in the plugin download area.

My site is dynamic, and uses rewrite rules that are over my head.

The plugin states that it only works for statically built sites - urls generated in dynamic mode will not be modified.

Bummer Frown

The concept of a Category Display Name for each Category should really be added.
I use a much less robust link manager at a diff site that uses this concept, and it is incredibly useful.

Thank you,

The build_category_dynamic option does allow you to choose your own column to use. However, you have to make sure the column is unique.

As Adrian says - you can use the build_category_format and build_category_dynamic options in the build options. This is what I am using and it works well. Let me know if you need any help.
