As a user of this plugin, I have to say it is a most excellent plugin, well worth the money. And the support is wonderful!

Hi xpert, thanks!

Hmmm, good question? I never evenn thought about the PHP, as you are the first person to ask.

The internal part should work, i.e. the tracking and admin side, as this is just from your admin panel. Maybe someone , or yourself even could tell me about placing tags into php files? Thats pretty much what EM uses.

I'll have to think about that!!

Thanks.

EDIT: Rayhne, thanks for the great comments!!Smile

Hi xpert,

Reading the documentation included with Links SQL 2.1.1 for the PHP install, it would seem that plug-ins and editors are NOT supported, and therefore you would not be able to use this plug-in (or any other) with the PHP front end. This is my understanding of this document, and I would be most happy to hear any differently from anyone.

Differences between the PHP version and Perl CGI version
--------------------------------------------------------
There are a few differences between the two versions. The administration side of
Links SQL still uses the Perl CGI, but if you decide to use the PHP front end,
there are some differences you should know about:

1. Adding to multiple categories in one request is not supported. It's currently
available in the CGI version, but isn't in use, so this should not be a
problem.
2. Editors are not supported.
3. Plugins are not supported.

I should clairify those docs. Plugins that enhance the userside are not supported, but plugins that work strictly with the admin area will work fine.

Also, you could use the editor monitor plugin as long as you are ok sending your users to the perl version (browser.cgi) -- everyone else can still go to page.php.

Cheers,

Alex

UPDATE

DYNAMIC DIRECTORIES NOW SUPPORTED

I have been testing EM in a dynamic directory environment, and after some modifactions, 95% of the features are now working with EM. This means you can now do anything that you could with a static directory, with very minor exceptions (only known exception is one tag on the editor profile page (categories tag).)

This makes editor monitor very much useable by those with dynamic directory setups.

I will be testing this with an existing dynamic directory user also.

During setup when using a dynamic directory, you will need to:

  1. Set the RootURL setting in EMSettings table to your root url, eg: http://www.yoursite.com
  2. Set the Root_HTML_Path setting in plug-in options to the path to your html root directory.

That easy!

These changes will take place in 1.1.1.Wink

How can i use the EM, when PHP frontend don't support editors?

Goodie!!!! Smile

Does that mean that the categories they run will not show up if you are using a dynamic setup. And would it be possible to add another field to the plugin for comments? Misc things that don't fit under any of the other profile fields?

There already is an EditorNotes column and tag for each editor. I will look at making this tag/information available for the profile pages for a future upddate.

Thanks.Smile

Hi xpert,

I don't think that Alex is saying you can't. I guess it depends on your skills with Links SQL, and your knowledge of how to split the users into editors or just users, and send them off to the appropriate code.

In other words, your editors would need to use the perl version of your Links (browser.cgi), and your regular users would continue to use your PHP front end.

I'm not sure what you mean by tag but the EditorNotes is what is used to post individual notes to the editors on the browser_info page, right? What I'm like is just a catch-all field for things that don't fit anywhere else but you want to post live on the profile page. IE: in the case of dynamic not being able to use the category field, folks could post their categories in the catch-all field.

The addition of another field to the profile pages would require a table change. This would mean exisitng users would have to manually backup their data, fully uninstall EM, before installing the new version, then manually re-enter the data. While I could add this new column, no-one else has indicated they would like another custom field like this for the profile page. If a few more seem interested (at the expense of the information backup etc), then I would certainly consider adding it. The alternative to backing up your information is to manually create the table column, though I would not advise doing this, if you don't know what you are doing.

In any case, somewhere down the line, I hope to get the categories tag working for the dynamic setup, but it won't be now.

Cool

Hey Ian, msg me when you have 100% of EM working under the PHP Frontend, thx!

Hi xpert,

This is not possible, as Alex already explained above, you have to split the Editors as the PHP part of it does not handle the editors. This means you could use EM in its present form along side your PHP users. What you are asking for is a change to Links, not EM.

Sorry, but it sounds like the EM will not be suitable for you.

OK!

I have found a crossover for the remote count and editor monitor plugins.

Is there a way of giving rewards to editors that have their submitted links use the graphic/counter from remote count?

This would not only institute a common goal amongst editors, it would also create a common goal amongst all link owners!Cool

Just a thought!

Interesting idea Brian!

I currently reward my editors a monthly bonus for displaying my logos on their sites. This is serperate to, and not including the counter.

I do see how your suggestoin could be useful, and I will give this some thought.

Thanks!

Hi Ian,

a comment about adding fields in a new version:

you could just leave the $DB->creator thing as it is in Install.pm (not using 'force'), and add a $DB->editor thingy after it to add the new column. Like this it will be fine for everyone, first time installers and upgraders.
