Re: request plug-in: 1 page for cat and sub-cats... In reply to
Plug-in requests should probably be in the Custom Modifications area. It's sort of a close call, but it could get really crowded here with all the people asking for things, and none of the actual "how to" stuff is visible.

Since there is a forum for "requests" lets try to use it.

There is a lot of information to go through here every day, and anything that the posters can do to help keep it organized goes a long way to getting good answers!

This forum is for questions about Links SQL 2.0 Plugins and modifications. Please do not post Links SQL 1.x questions here.

But I posted in de sql links 2.0 anyway....

Thank pugdog...

personally i don't think it should go in the custom place, that will get very confusing if all links2 hacking went in there.

My suggestion would be that if someone is releaseing a plugin they do

[RELEASE] Review plugin

and then everything else is seen as a request or as a discussion about plugins. [RELEASE] is very easy to see so long no one does [REQUEST] just don't ok!

this is how it is done at vbulletin and bar those who insist on doing [REQUEST] it works real well.

Trouble is that is revese emphasis. The [REQUEST] takes away impact from the [RELEASE] and the two words are so close, they won't stand apart.

We have a "Custom Mods" forum where people can do requests.

Once a mod is picked up, and someone wants to do it, the discussion can move here.

It's just that there seems to be a place for everything, and the Questions/Discussions grey area has been cleared up, so let's use the new lay out to advantage.

I don't like policing forums, and refuse to do it, but it seems a general consensus opinion would benefit everyone in the long term.

This database is plug-in support and wish lists for _existing_ plugings.

The Custom Mods is a wishlist area for things not yet undertaken.

And Plug-In Authors is the developers area where we'll bore most people to death :)

That is the whole point, no one shoul use [REQUEST] that was what i was saying, the idea of [RELEASE] only works if no one uses [REQUEST] see?

I think using the custom mods section to talk about potential plugins is a bad idea (personally). Firstly, because that section is for anything, not just links SQL and is more of a commercial nature as well whereas i think most people are hoping that a large majroity of plugins won't be. Just think how rediculously busy it would be in there if every body who wanted to talk about a potential mod for links 2.0, links SQL 1.1, Links 2.0, Gossamer Mail, DBman etc.. all went to the custom forum at the top? it sort of defeats the point of seperating the sections to my mind and is very very confusing. I see it (personally again!) as more of a way of getting something done quite different to what we have, be it a large project or often a way to actually get gossamer to do something themselves.

I just think it is going to be annoying to have to go into 5 forums to check out one product. Instead, the incredibly simple system of having discussions in this forum about potential plugins and then seperating releases with a [RELEASE] to me just seems obvious so long no one uses [REQUEST].

Perhaps we need a word from Alex on how this should work?

for a point in kind, pugdog when you started posting your status on your mods you were making there, i missed them for quite a few days because i was not interested in a custom project. I saw what you were doing as a links SQL mod and so should be in the links SQL forum and did not go over there. At the point it perhaps made sense with only 1 links NG forum but now, i don't think so ;)

The difference is, this mod is in development -- it's not a "request". I've released it to a half dozen people so far, and I'm about to have them check the 2.1 version before posting a list of features.

The "I want a mod that does..." is really a custom job, or a wish-list item for the links discussion.

I really, really, would like to see the plug-in forums stay mostly developer/user, and not general chatter and keep the noise very low.

It's my feeling, but with the number of posts going on, it can get out of hand really fast.

As I said, I'm not going to attempt to police it... this is a discussion at the moment, but I would hope with so many forums to pick from self-policing/moderation occurs to keep things sort of ordered.
