Is it possible yet to use globals in the newsletter?

I've read a post about it. It said that Alex would look into it and that the next version of the mass mailer would be better and had more options, but this was along time ago. May be he made some drastic changes that i'm not aware of?

But when i use globals in the newsletter template they are just ignored.
