Hi,

Is there a way to allow the user to specify an arbitrary start and stop date, and then have gforum only search within that range? Right now, the user can only specify a start date (sort of), and the end date is always now.

No, unfortunately Gossamer Forum is not currently capable of such search parameters. You can customize the starting date arbitrarily to any value you like, but there is no ending date - anything posted since the date you entered is returned.
