There is a setting where if you haven't entered a forum in a long time (I think it defaults to 90 days), then Gossamer Forum reverts all posts to new.
This was neccessary to speed up calculating the number of new posts on a forum (i.e. if a forum has 100,000 posts, and you haven't been in there in a long time, it was a lot of extra work to determine that 20,000).
You can change this setting in the admin.
