I'd like to add a feature where people could place uploaded images amidst text in their posts. A smart user can obviously go back and edit their post putting tags where they want but is there a way to do this at the time of the post? Perhaps a global of somesort? Or do you think this would take a plugin?

It would need to be a plugin. The issue is you don't know the final URL of any attached files until the post has been made.
