Is there a way to set up email notification so the messages are sent to the "display" email address rather than the registration address?

We force our users to register with their IPS's email rather than any throw-away accounts (hotmail.com, etc.) and many users would prefer to have some control over which address email is sent to.

Either you have the control, or they....

You can tell them that they can change their email address to their hotmail one once they are registered.

We do not let them change their registration email information. It's the only way we can hold them accountable! I made it impossible for them to do it by removing that choice from the template.

That doesn't really make it impossible, but it will stop 99% of your users.

What you could do is write a plugin that creates first of all a new field in the user database, called user_email_original. Then when a user subscribes, and is validated, the plugin copies the subscription email address into the user_email_orignial field. The you will always have their original email address, in case you need it, but you can still allow the users to change their email address.
