Given that I want to use the UserID value for displaying related data is there any problem in making it a hidden field on a modify form? The correct UserID has to be generated against the record when the initial details are addded. The subsequent modify function allows the userid value to be overwritten with another value. Whilst it does not seem to allow the storage of the new value, the very fact that input is allowed into that field will guarantee a user will "play".
Any ideas?

You can certainly make it a hidden field. That's probably the best thing to do.
