Application - best approach

Application - best approach
I haven't started doing this yet, but am still in the planning stage. What I want to do is put on the Web a fairly long application to join the trade organization for which I work. I want to ask advice here on the best way to proceed. )The Web is hosted on a machine running Unix (OpenBSD) and the Apache Web server).

Would it be best to make one long form where the user just fills it out (text, pull-down menuss, check boxes, etc.) and just keeps scrolling until the end of the form and then hits submit? Or would it be better to have the user complete a section of the form then go to the next section and so on? Presumably this second approach would write to as many text files as there are sections of the application?

I am looking for advice and possibly pointing me toward examples of a similar applications that exist out there to take a look at.

Also, are there pitfalls to be avoided when making an application like this?

Thanks

Neil

I apologize for posting twice. I must have hit the submit button twice by accident.
