Web Server
Can someone please tell me how much it costs for a dedicated line in USA and can you guys tell me if many of you run your own webservers or do you use a webhost. The problem is, that Im from the UK and for a 1mbps line here it costs about $15,000 per year and for a 10mbps about $60,000. Now for an 18yr old student, that is a little harsh-yes?

Well if anyone wants to offer a poor student (with a professional and soon to be very popular site-currently located at www.audio-grabber.com)some webspace, then it would be much appreciated. I would give acknowledgement on my site of course!

Bye
Thanks

Thankyou
From Paul Wilson.

Don't look at getting a dedicated line to your place, co-locate or host at another ISP. Trying to do it at your location involves all sorts of things that you are better off sharing.

A 1mbps line here, on a dedicated circuit is about $1000/month, if you provide the server. About $1200-1500 if you lease a server.

A 10mbps line is about $10,000 (plus any discounts, maybe even in the $8k range or less), again if you co-locate or lease.

These are sustained bandwidth hosting options.

If most of your customers are in the UK, you might look at finding a dedicated hosting option there, and I know there are a few, though I don't know who. If most of your customers are going to be in the US, you think, then it would pay to have a server here.

Here are a few hosting comapnies that may offer what you want:

http://www.w2s-inter.net/hosting.html - An ex-student who may be sympathetic. From around £80 pa.
http://www.http://www.hotchilli.com/ - I hear that their performance is good. From around £100 pa.
http://www.webfusion.com/ - Have to pay a little more for MySQL on this one. From around £100 pa (about £200 with MySQL, PHP3, etc.).
http://www.redhotant.com/ The press has been bad and so was the service. Much improved now and offers a lot for around £30 pa. Currently hosts my site, albeit I'm likely to change later in the year. The only one that doesn't charge for bandwidth over and above 1-2GB pcm.

Positive Internet - http://www.positive-internet.com/

I currently have a virtual account 250+vat (£293.75) and run all 7 of my Qango sites from one of these accounts, take a look - http://www.qango.com/

I'm not sure how big you're planning on making your site in the long-run, but I would recommend Positive as a good starting point and they're probably well within your budget Smile.

If you have any questions about my site or Positive as a host, email me and I'll give you my honest opinion - webmaster@qango.com

All the best
Shaun

rackspace.com has a free setup this month. I find their services reasonable (in the industry) but they tend to make it up on extra bandwidth. To get 300 GB (10 GB/day) on a reasonably configured Intel server would be about $1500/mo.

At that rate, you should have a contract for "SUSTAINED" bandwidth, as I've explained in other messages.

But, if you anticipate low or moderate traffic, of a text based site, their rates are pretty good.

They were on my list of ISP's before I found the one I'm with now.
