Promote Searching

Promote Searching
To help promote searching of this forum, I've added a new tag:

[ search ] search terms [ / search ]

will create a link that will search all forums for that term. It defaults to an OR match. Here's an example of a search for binary mode.

Let me know what you think, any improvements that could be made, etc.

Cheers,

Alex

Totally cool....

I really think since this is obviously going to be entered by someone who has done, or is doing a search, that allowing "and" and "phrase" searches would be very, very beneficial. Many searches are pretty targeted.

Perhaps + and " could be used to denote the "and" and "phrase", though how to do that in the context of the w3t regex parser I'm not sure. Unless there is

search and then search_p and search_a for "phrase" and "and" searches?

See, Alex. Give the people a little, and they always want more!! :)

I agree with pugdog, although I have no idea about what all the coding stuff means.

If I had to chose which type of search to use, I would opt for an "exact phrase" search. I rarely use an "and" search and I don't think I've ever used an "or" search.

It is a great addition to the forum, though, even with an "or" search.

Ok, you can now use:

[ search ]+binary mode[ /search ]

to do an AND search.

[ search ]"binary mode"[ /search ]

to do a PHRASE search.

[ search ]binary mode[ /search ]

to do an OR search. Example:

AND: binary mode
OR : binary mode
PHRASE: binary mode

Ok, I know this is going to sound like an incredibly stupid question, but... I take it these tags are something that can be added into your posts, not an actual method of searching unspecified (beforehand) terms? I suppose that's of use when someone is asking where to find info, but wouldn't it be less work on the part of the person answering the question to just say where they found it?

I must be missing something, because it seems like a cool feature that has no real added value...

Dan,

the reason is that when you point someone to information "search on"... if you do a search, you can put the words that will turn up the messages for them.

If there were 9 good messages, it saves having to put the URL of each message in, _and_ 3 months down the road, it will find any "new" messages that might have been added relavent to that search.

Make sense??

It's a short hand for some of the things the "moderators" (official and unofficial" have been telling people to do -- "Search for x y and z" ...now you can just put the link for them to click.

Does it do anything "new" ?? No, but ... it certainly satisfies the KISS principles. :)

Hi Alex,

I know that this probably is not a hard mod to do, but could you share how you did this?

The reason I am asking is so if anyone else, including myself, want to add this mod into other forum scripts.

Thanks again, its a great mod.

I hadn't considered that aspect. That sounds like a good reason for it. Still not sold on the rest of it, but there's no harm in it. Smile
