i am facing this problem, too many search.cgi 'till
the apache hang.

i have fine tune the httpd.conf, but it still won't help.

can anyone give me some suggestions?

Look for

if (($numhits > 250) and (($grand_total * 0.75) < $numhits)) {

n search.cgi. Change this to a lower number and this may help, i expect the problem you are having is just where it can't cope with the high number of results you are having!
