hw 2 self setup web server on my PC ?
Hello !

I'm just a beginer :) ! I'd like to learn how to setup my own web server (NT or Linux which one is better?) . What things do I need to have (software, hardware) ? because I don't want to use webhosting service from another company.

Hope someone can tell me in more detail :)

Thanks alot !

Try http://www.perl.com/...ware.html#sourcecode to get the software. Windows is probably your best bet.

NT/Lunux are operating systems not web servers.

http://www.apache.org
http://www.perl.com
http://www.php.net
http://www.mysql.org

They are the basic software packages you need.

BTW I would only use this for testing purposes - you would not be wise trying to host your own website, firstly you need an extremely fast line, not a cable modem or dsl which im assuming you have.

Dear N.Age

you should go for Linux. It's free, and works like a charm (at least for webserving purposes).

Try for example RedHat or Mandrake. You will find everything you need on two free CDs (downloadable from their sites).

Everything you need is: apache webserver, perl, mysql, php, mod_perl, etc etc

And you really need a fast line (i.e. not a modem connection to the internet, but at least ADSL).

>>but at least ADSL<<

Try a dedicated line [:)]

ADSL will die with about 100 visitors to your site, probably less.

ADSL has dynamic IP's too.

.......and your provider probably has rules about setting up servers and will probably tell you to shut it down.

Pac Bell (SBC) has a "server" ADSL package with static IP(s) and fast throughput. It's usable but there is no redundancy what so ever. It would work for a personal and/or test site but that's about it.

If you just want to *goof around* and not spend any money beyond $20... get Red Hat or similar product (my version of "Red Hat for Dummies" came with the OS & a free T-shirt - woo hoo!). You can set up PWS in windows, or get a free evaluation copy of w2k server (120 day self-destruct). There are websites you can log into that will re-direct your domain or IP back to your dynamic IP assigned by AOL, or local ISP.

If you're interested in learning, then I'd suggest all of the above (one at a time of course).

If testing, i'd probably go to the get the servers they assigned above, and if i didn't want to get a domain name or had a slow connection, i'd just use
Dns 2 Go"
