usage of icons

I have noticed that a number of sites and online applications are using ex. folder icons that essentially are made my Microsoft. (FileMan as an example)

Does anyone know if such icons oublic domain (as it would ease the use for frequent Windows users) - or if people are just using them and hoping to avod problems with MS?

A lot of icons you see about are taken from the collection that come with development environments such as Microsoft Visual Studio.

There is a 1.3MB file that comes with MSVS listing redistribution rights for all the MSVS files including DLL's.

All the bitmaps, icons, cursors come under the heading "DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS - Standard" - whatever that means!

There is also "Extended Use" and "Limited Use"

But what about using them on web-sites? Any ideas - I see it used many places.

What if I change a pixel - then it is not the same right? Wink

I really don't know - I'm sure it's stated somewhere but I don't know where.

I'd just use it - the chances of you getting into any trouble are almost zilch.

On a somewhet related note there was an article on Slashdot recently (maybe last week sometime) about the lady that created the icons you see everywhere with nearly all operating systems. I think she created all the icons for the early versions of Windows 3 through to 95 and all icons for Mac OS 8 through to X, amongst other OSs and applications. You'd might want to give her a ring. ;-)
