spam is killin me
Jeeze, so far this week one of my business domains has received over 3,000 spams. They`re all the same "teenager finds $70,000 dollars" it looks like a chain email and I`m hoping like all chains it will come to an end they are addressed to every conceivable name you could imagine at my domain.

Sure I`ve set up filtering and auto server deletion but what the heck do I do when I go travelling and have to use webmail.. I just don`t know, I guess if you want to make someones business difficult this is the way, maybe I`m getting paranoid Crazy

Anybody else having this problem..

cheers

Use webmail that supports filtering? =) We use Gossamer Mail and SpamAssassin, and when we are on the road and checking email through Gossamer Mail it filters all spam to a spam folder for mass deletion later after a quick review.

Thanks Alex, sounds like great software but too expensive a solution for me unfortunately.

Do you have any cheaper 1 domain licences or lite versions for it without all the bells and whistles?

What mail server do you use?

I've setup my copy of qmail to use rblsmtpd which should in theory block known spammers.

Our experience has been rblsmtpd with just open relay databases gets about 10% of spam. If you add more aggressive databases like bl.spamcop.net, it jumps up to 75% but drops a lot of legit email. The good thing about spam assassin is you still get the email so you can scan to see if it's important every now and then.

Yeah, same results here. SpamAssasin stores all your junk mail so you can scan through them now and again, and gives much better results than any other setup I've dealt with.

I've just been trying to install qmail from scratch with a virus scanner and spamassassin - everything seems ok regarding collecting mail but when trying to send mail the smtp server closes the connection :(

I've been looking at the qmail scanner log and it looks ok....

How are you running qmail-smtpd? What's your tcpserver start line look like?

After some serious hair pulling I decided to restore the old configuration (the hair pulling was done trying to restore the old setup...eek!).

Finally I managed to get it up and running again - I've been stuck without email for a few hours...eww
