URGENT:Server reboots ever 5-10 minutes
Hi,

I've moved to a new server, and since this time the server reboots every 5-10 minutes without a reason.

I've copied all my old files(html,DBManSQL,LinksSQL,GTForum;GTMail) via telnet/scp form the old to the new server.

Does anyone has an idea, what the problem could be?

(I'm using RadHat Linux 7.3 and Apache 1.3.27)

The only time I've experienced frequent reboots was when someone installed a rootkit on an old server I used and decided to setup an IRC bot.

You should check running processes and also your access/error/boot logs.

It means the process isn't running. It is "defunctional". It's a process that has exited but its parent hasn't called wait() in order to find its exit status.

You can enter:

ps -deafl

...to find the parent of the defunct process.

this might be a hint, but I'm not very fit in server administration-issues and I'm wondering why nearly all my cgi's produce these defunct-things. On my old server I had exactly the same cgi-files and there were no problems.

Could it be, that it is just a configuration-issue in my httpd.conf-file??

Have you tried looking at /var/log/messages, syslog, debug logs? You may have a software watchdog installed which reboots the server automatically if the load goes over a certain threshold. If it is then you'll probably see messages like this:

Mar 25 14:18:35 myhost watchdog[407]: loadavg 94 76 46 is higher than the given threshold 200 75 50!
Mar 25 14:18:35 myhost watchdog[407]: shutting down the system because of error -3
in your syslog, right before it reboots.

If it's a new server, it could be the result of bad hardware, or maybe a incorrectly configured kernel.

But it seems that it is not a watchdog-problem.

The beginning of every reboot in my /var/log/messages is:

I notice webmin there...you can use webmin to view syslog.
