Source Control Software Recommendations?

Source Control Software Recommendations?
It is about time for me to get an inexpensive, possibly free, but effective source control tool, since I am now working with remote virtual team members in multiple companies.

I know that Concurrent Versions System (CVS) is the most widely used software, but I am wondering what you all recommend.

Thanks in advance.

CVS has some limitations to it, but for the most part it does the job. Unless you have some requirements that CVS doesn't address, you may as well use it.

I'm looking forward to when Subversion is finished and released as 1.0, as it will hopefully be effective in addressing the CVS limitations while maintaining consistency in usage. Until that time, CVS works for me

Thanks, Mark....

I took a look at Subversion last night and it looks great, but it's still in BETA, so I don't want to rely on it until it's ready to go.

Of course, over a LAN, I used Visual SourceSafe in the past and it was a decent software, but had limitations in terms of multiple and amendment of codes within files. But now, since I am working with a bunch of different remote teams (using different technologies from PHP to ColdFusion to Perl), I am looking for a better Source Control Product.

I downloaded WinCVS last night and played around with it a bit...initially downloaded one of their latest BETAs that required Phython, so I uninstalled it and installed one of the stable versions for Win32, it looks like it may do the job, but need to play around with it some more.

Actually, it only requires Python to use some of the macros that come with it (which I've never used). I have the latest beta of wincvs installed at work, though i never use it; i prefer working command line on my unix box. But... the beta wincvs programs work just fine in my experience.

Hi,

We looked around and CVS is by far the best free one out there. It also has the advantadge that there are a ton of tools available for it (CVS Monitor and ViewCVS being two nice ones).

SVN is pretty nice, but was quite diffuclt to setup, and the web tools weren't nearly as developed. Does look quite promising though.

Cheers,

Alex
