I am playing with the idea to register a certain domain name. Unfortunately, the domain is already registered.

However, it is registered up to 2 May 2002 through register.com, but it has not been renewed it seems. Still, it is shown as already registered.

How would I go about to claim this domain?

You could go the expensive way and try to snatch it through services such as snapnames.com or expirefish.com or check back frequently if the domain name has been dropped from the registry (usually 4-6 weeks after expiration, with Network Confusion/Verisign up to 2 years and more).

You should be careful of domain squatting. Research the owners of the domain and if they are associated with an established company or organization, they will have a lot of leverage to keep the domain name if you try to take it from them.
