Installation Logging for WinXP
Hi All

You know when you install a program, sometimes all sorts of things get installed all over the place?

Well, I've been searching for some way to log all of the installed things. This would be for several reasons:

1. Delete everything in case of an uninstall
2. Uninstall/Delete unnecessary parts
3. Debugging in case of program problems, especially if operating system seems affected

Does anyone know of a program or whatever that can log all the changes to your XP machine when installing a program?

I tried the utility in Norton, but it only recognizes certain install names.

Many thanks Smile

Hey DogTags,

Don't have an immediate answer for you. But you may be able to find some resources in the following Discussion Forum:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/winme

The DSL Reports forums are very active and you might find an answer already posted or post your question there.

BTW: I, too, used to use Norton Systemworks on my old computer, and it was nice having a decent installation log, which I think is lacking in all the virgin Windows operating systems.

You're right about the annoyance of having files thrown all over the place...don't know what the Windows developers were thinking, but they must've done it for some reason.

Thanks, Stealth.

I'm looking at Your Uninstaller:

http://www.ursoftware.com

They claim to remove everything, even registry settings. I can say that it works fast. Looks good so far.

It still, though, is not a log of where the files and things are installed.

The hunt continues.........

Thanks, again Smile

Hello DogTags, www.sysinternals.com has many tools such as regmon
a registry monitor and filemon a file access monitor that can help
in viewing what a program is doing in real time.

They have many other fun tools with source code also.

Thanks cornball

Hi cornball

Funny you mention them. I use their Process Viewer, which is really great. Helped me find this background thing installed with the cable modem that was eating resources like crazy. I just turn it off now.

I'll check them out. If I remember right, they have a whole load of things.

Cheers Smile

I use many utilities from Sysinternals, including:

* FileMon
* PortMon
* Process Explorer (actually see that there is an update, I have 8.30 installed, and 8.35 is available)
* RegMon
* TCPView
* TDIMon

Great set of software products to say the least!
