/usr/local/apache/bin/httpd
Argh..this is getting me really pi*$ed off! I've restart apache, mySQL, Webmin and everything else I know how to restart..but this lot of stuff just won't go away! Does anyone know how to get rid of it? I've tried;

killall /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd

That seems to work...until you do another ps -aux, and its there still Frown

Hey! Me too! :-)

You could just send someone the configuration files, you know. No need to let anyone onto your turf. :-)

100 Apache's is pretty common for a heavily trafficed site (especially adult). You do have a few warnings you should fix up in your httpd.conf file though, the ErrorDocument just means you need to specify relative url's for 401 (as in /errors/401.htm not http://domain/errors/401.htm).

Cheers,

Alex

Just an update, the httpd.conf errors are fixed....a few name-based vhosts were specified without having any vhosts and the vhosts themselves were mis-configured slightly.

How many servers do you manage, Andy?

Have you considered going for managed hosting?

Hi. Thanks for all the replys. Pauls help is much appreciated Smile I've got a mate of mine looking into it, to try and get apache/PHP/Perl/sendmail/mysql etc working properly. He does system admin as a job...so if he can't do it...then it looks like a format and re-install everything job Unsure Luckily I made recent backups of my site this time (unlikle last time, where i lost everything)...so I'm learning my lessons Unimpressed

Something else I noticed was that the process list is showing 15 ftp connections all from the same host.

Is it you using tiscali?

Yeah. Thats another weird thing though...why is their 15 connections open? When logging in via FTP, I could get in on all my domains...except ace-installer.com. It got up to the logging in part, and then after the 'verifying password' part it just stays Unsure I'll bet getting my new laptop with Linux on soon..so I'm gonna have a good play with that, and hopefully learn a few tricks on how not to mess up my server...LOL

Laptop running Linux? Is it an old laptop? Will you buy it pre-configured with Linux? Linux doesn't have as wide a hardware support as Windows system, so be sure to check that the dist. of Linux you'll be installing can manage your hardware. I know of many folks who've ran into problems installing Linux on a laptop due to unsupported hardware.

I wasn't talking of the actual specs of the machine - I was more interested in the manufacturer of your hardware. Linux, by default, has very limited support for hardware (repeat not even percentage point on Microsoft's plug'n'play vast hardware support).

My mate has windows 98 installed on a 233, with almost the same specs, and his one take 2 mins to load Wink

Right. But Dell doesn't create the chipset etc.

Windows will load considerably faster than the time a *ix machine takes to boot up. I think that's what Paul was getting at.

What? Linux (can't really say for other *nix's) can boot way faster than a windows computer. With quota's turned off our servers can boot from power up to login prompt in 30 seconds. Not many windows computers can do that!

Yeah?! My XP boots up to login prompt in less than 7 seconds. My RH on same hardware boots up in 15 seconds,
