Hah, I really doubt that. You must not be including BIOS initialization, because that would be at least 5 seconds.

I was just about to say, I use XP with a fairly quick pc and it takes _way_ over 7 seconds.

Having said that, Madrake tages ages too (and eternity to shutdown) :(

Hm. My XP takes < 7 seconds to boot up. I've got 512k RAM, and a 1.5 mhz machine. Nothing special.

FreeBSD on the same setup (granted it has two hard drives, and it has to bring two ethernet interfaces up) takes way over 20 seconds.

Cheers

I just timed it.....37 seconds to load xp pro with 640 mb ram

There's no way you can do it in less than 7.

I used to have Win 98 booting up in 10 seconds...but that was ONLY after a clean install, with only the M$ Office programs installed. Once it was all loaded up it would take at least a minute! I agree with Paul..there is no way you can boot a whole PC, from start to finish in 7 seconds!

Strange, folks. It works.

But I haven't got my machine loaded up with junk like Kazaa, like yours. ;-)

It also brigns up two network interfaces. One lan and my dsl connection.

I can create a movie clip of it to show you if you want. :-)

The machine has 512 RAM, 1.5 gig mhz p-4.

Thats irrelevant, Im timing up to the login screen before any apps even load up....I don't have them loading as system services.

Up to the login screen? Hm. OK. I guess I'll have to set a login screen, then. My box at home is set with no password at the moment, so I can just sly straight in.

If I can nab the digi camera from round here I'll make a clip for you tonight. :-)

You might also find this useful, if (sorry, when ;-)) you'll run into trouble with hardware support and Linux:

wow that's a lot of ram Tongue. I think my old IBM XT had more ram that that.

Are you including BIOS initialization because no way a BIOS initializes as well as windows booting up would be less than 7 seconds. Even just windows intializing in 7 seconds is unbelievable.

maybe no cards?

I never could get my windoze box to start up anywhere near 20 secs. Of course, it was tad faster than my mac machine but still ... from power button to login screen .... maybe he's counting from a different start point?
