blimey .... what's the correct US translation?
hehe, some of students were wondering what blimey actually means. Being American I have a slight idea but could somebody explain or offer other suggestions that an American can understand?

how about the word bloddy while I've got your attention.

One of my students is fond of the British version of English.... no problem here, but it's a problem at times for me to help with translating the British specific words to Japanese for them. Crazy

My understanding is that bloody means damn or darn....

Bloody isn't used on it's own, it's normally bloody hell (which is rarely said by anyone)

Thats pretty much the same as blimey except a bit harsher. You could say it in shock or anger. eg...

Bloody hell you ran over my cat you fool

or

Bloody hell that guy just stole a car

Hmm. And I thought "bloody" means that some is full of blood? Like they found his sweatshirt covered in blood, or "bloody" :-)

I beg to differ, Paul....

Sometimes it is used like "bloody baseball game" meaning "damn baseball game"...thus you are not correct, IMHO...it can be used by itself.

Yes, Paul is correct. I was hoping for the British usage of these words. Some of my students love Mr. Bean and have watched Harry Potter and these 2 words popped up in class. Of course, they looked to me for the answer but being born and raised in the States I wasn't sure of the British usage, I too began to wonder.

gosh, darn, wow, .... hmmm I really thought they were of a stronger nature.

ie, OH fudge === OH F_CK (a word play to mean the same thing without using the actual word).
