Video Formats
Ok, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to electrical equipment so any help si mucho appreciato.

I've just ordered a DVD player. Here are some of the specs:

Quote:
Playable formats: DVD-Video, CD, SVCD/VCD, CD-R/RW, MP3 (CD-R/RW)
96kHz/24-bit audio D/A Converter (P.E.M. D.D. Converter)
Dolby Digital/DTS/MPEG Digital output
10-bit/27MHz video D/A converter
Scart with RGB

What I'd like to know is:

a) If I download an mpeg or avi can I put it directly on a CD-R and play it on the dvd player?
b) If not what format should I choose?
c) What is the difference between VCD and SVCD
d) If the answer to question a is yes, what is the best codec to use?

Merci :)

Edit: I have read some stuff regarding VCD/SVD online but am looking for personal experiences too.

Lots of hard questions. I just installed a firewire card and a software based non linear editing system to edit digital video, so have started playing with this kindo of stuff.

I wrote a couple things, erased them and you would probably be better served by going to one of the digital video editing sources for information:

Thanks. I'll check those out.

I did a few tests yesterday and using TMPGEnc I can convert the mpegs into SVCD and that works on the dvd player.
