I heard viewer levels are dropping but I don't see why, it's funnier than ever...there were some old re-runs of the early episodes the other day and they were absolute rubbish, from the quality of the animation to the voices to the humor.

Have to disagree on that. The Simpsons were really excellent until 1996/97, very sociocritical and with a subtle kind of humour. Since then the series became quite superficial and trivial. To quote Homer: "Boooo-ring!"
