Win98 2HD's

Win98 2HD's
Has anyone had any success using 2 HD's with Win98? Does W98 support more than one?

I've had to downgrade from XP (which detected my second hard drive perfectly) but as soon as I got Win98 installed it stopped recognising my second hard drive.

With XP I saw:
Code:
C: <linux> <CDROM> F: G:
7GB 11GB 20GB 20GB

Now with Win98 I see:
Code:
C: <linux> <CDROM> D:
7GB 11GB

....and when I click D: it says a device attached to the system isn't functioning properly.

Is there anything I can install to get 2 drives working on Win98?

Here's what the device manager looks like if it helps:

Have you tried re creating your master boot records?

Code:
fdisk /mbr

Yes but it didn't help. It is a clean install anyway so it isn't the boot records.

Clean installations of any OS doesn't neccessarily overwrite your MBR.

Either way it didn't fix it. Thanks for the idea anyway.

Hm. I know Windows 98 supports dual hard drives. It can support quite a few actually. Can't find anything on the Microsoft website. Have you looked in the computer manual?

maybe because you formatted your drives as NTFS in win XP and since win98 doesn't support NTFS...

My primary hard drive was formatted before re-installing Win98 and is fat32, so is the secondary drive.

was the drive that doesn't show in Win 98 ever compressed?

I am running more than one drive now in Win 98, but before one drive I had would only show up in bios and not Windows because it was compressed and then I tried to delete the partition without decompressing it.

It looks like it has its own partition type.

Partition magic says:

55(HEX) EZ-DRIVE

....next to Partition Type. Whereas my original drive says Fat32

Looks like I need to reformat it, however it has stuff on the drive that I need so how do I get it :( ?

Um. Re-install WinXP. Why the un-install?

I've decided to install XP on a seperate parition and Win98 on another so I can have the best of both worlds.

BTW, for any XP users, I found a cool updates page (and also I didn't realise, but it shows you a different site at microsoft.com than when using Win98 - cool!)

Anyway here is the URL:

Just out of interest, why do you feel the need to still have Win98 installed on your system? Surely and upgrade is there to replace prior versions?

Well one of several reasons is the fact that my scanner software and my copy of partition magic doesn't work with XP.

Hm. I thought they built these things backwards-compatible these days. Obviously not. You can't get upgrade drivers for your scanner?

There you go. It was hard to believe that such a big company didn't make an effort to support WinXP.
