World Cup Fever in Lotusland
Man, the World Cup is reaching a feverish pitch in Vancouver. I live in the downtown core (West End), and celebrations continue through the night until 5 or 6 in the morning. Huge crowds cheering their teams on, cars honking their horns and waving flags, noisemakers galore. Non-stop through the night, scattered in different locations. The din reverberates throughout the city. Gotta love it. I'm not terribly big into soccer, and Canada as usual did not qualify (but are represented on the English team by Owen Hargreaves). However, I love the excitement!

As an aside in honour of our local soccer team (Whitecaps):

(chorus)
White is the Colour, Soccer is the Game,
We're all together, and winning is our aim.
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
'Cause Whitecaps, Whitecaps is our name.

(stanza 1)
Come to the park and we'll welcome you,
Wear our white, and see us through,
Sing loud and clear till the day is done,
Sing "Whitecaps" everyone.

(repeat chorus)
White is the Colour, Soccer is the Game,
We're all together, and winning is our aim.
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
'Cause Whitecaps, Whitecaps is our name.

(stanza 2)
Cheer us on whether rain or fine,
We can shine, all the time.
Home or away come and see us play,
You're welcome any day. HEY!!

(repeat chorus)
White is the Colour, Soccer is the Game,
We're all together, and winning is our aim.
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
'Cause Whitecaps, Whitecaps is our name.

(repeat chorus)
White is the Colour, Soccer is the Game,
We're all together, and winning is our aim.
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
'Cause Whitecaps, Whitecaps is our name

Vancouver is very cosmopolitan, and multicultural. So depending on the teams playing, fans show up in support (often in large numbers) for their (native or ancestral country) team. Everyday you'll see different flags being flown from cars. Well, we still have the Whitecaps Wink

ughhh Sapporo held 3 games and hosted a horde of 4,000+ police and reserved 3 boats to export hooligans.

definitely sucks when you think about celebrating and having police on every corner Frown

hehe...always be prepared as i say...

Yeh but "football fever" is great...well I like it...
one word "ITALIA", too bad they lost to Croatia tho, pretty disappointing from a country where soccer is the predominant sport...

AND YOU GOTTA LOVE THE BRITISH TV ANNOUNCERS!!!

I'm a hockey fan basically but this soccer fever is pretty sweet!

yeh...checking in soccer is a foul...and for good reason because most of the players are pussies enough as it is...

I prefer to call them cheats. Anyone who dives or goes to ground looking for a free kick/penalty is a cheat IMO.

I'm afraid to say it but Michael Owens penalty against Argentina was not a penalty....he so dived.

Obviously you didn't see it from the angle I saw it. Michael Owen was obviously tripped.

I saw it from every angle....this is the UK :)

As it was an English player the commentators made every effort to talk themselves into believing it was a penalty...of course if it was an Argentinian player you can guarantee they would have been claiming it was a dive.

You don't go down that hard when someone brushes against your leg.

I dunno I watched one game forgot what it was...but the goalie came out to get the ball and the player must have been thinking "what a good time to dive", because they tied the game up 1-1 with like 1 minute left...

maybe they should stick to soccer (football for you Paul) and leave the acting to professional actors...just a thought

haha German defenseman with the same first name just blantly tripped a Cameroon fellow.
Most yellows I've seen in a long time.

Acting was pretty bad in that game last night. Some good pushing went on though!

Yeh did you see the last italy game when one of the italian players was tripped in front of the net? They didn't call a penalty...they call penalties for the stupidest things now. I mean that wasn't a slide tackle that looked more like a guy dropping to his behind to kick the other guy in the shins...Of course it must be hard to keep up with penalties on a field that is the size of two hockey stadiums...or does it just look so big on TV.

Both teams advance to Best 16 finals at the head of their group.

Japan and Korea!

IS their going to be a major upset with number 33 or so and number 40 ranked teams win the tourney under the power of their home country advantage?

Congrats to the nice win.

And also to the German team.

@England

I've been asked a few times and I couldn't really answer ...
1.) Why does Beckham wear long sleeves? Is it to hide a tatoo or a deformaty?
2.) Why the white back ground with a red cross? Something going back to King Richard?
3.) Are Wales and Scotland also included in the team?

This certainly has been an interesting World Cup to say the least!!!
