Value of sub-domains over sub-directories...
Hi All

I've always wondered why someone would use a sub-domain instead of a sub-directory.

http://fred.yoursite.com
http://www.yoursite.com/fred

Any opinions/thoughts? Can sub-domains do some things that sub-directories can't? Are those differences worth it?

Thanks muchly Smile

sub-domains are more flexible than directories but you don't always need them. For example if you want to use a secure server then you require a seperate ip and if you want to use your main domain name for the secure server for marketing purposes or whatever then you can set up a sub-domain with the new ip. For example:

http://www.foo.com - 111.111.111.111
https://secure.foo.com - 111.111.111.112

Obviously a directory is just that....it is a directory within one site, but a sub-domain can be a different ip, a different server etc.

That wasn't the clearest of exaplanations, sorry Blush

I like em because then you can do:

support.foo.com
forums.foo.com
fungames.foo.com

Also, because it moves a whole word out of the path to the www position ...
www.foo.com/suppport/ -> support.foo.com

Simple but it works for me Angelic

openoffice + gimp + sketch ... Smile

I use sub-domains for website design so I can reference images and file paths from the / root directory.
