You missed the DVD-R which is pretty nice, and the 5 pack of dvd's for $25.

Short on software? I don't think so. I think maybe ten years ago. It's just a different mindset, that's all. (at least, that's what I think). I have been working on macs forever. I am, however, nervous about moving up to OS X. havent gone there yet. Not all applications work in X yet. But you can run 9.21 and X on the same machine. Anyway.
I find that I run into bugs that are only mac specific... Like the browserbug in LSQL (I think it has been fixed) and also the template editor resize window thingy... never holds the resize for me on IE mac. Others as well. For the longest time, I would be frustrated and only to find out later that it was a bug. I don't think Alex got a mac, Last I heard from him, he had one visiting the office for a while.

Lol...anyone read all the comments at Slashdot about the new mac? Theyhave some funny stuff on it. There is a thing going on where they are asking fornew names for 'em I personally have no problem about macs, but I found mostof the other users comments quite funny...

short of software ::: Like it's the opposite now!
1.) Apple is now the largest vendor of *nix
2.) OS 9 software -- on the skimpy side but quality prevades quantity ... take a look at the offerings for M$ 50 of the same thing with 50 good things spread out through the 50 products. Up to OS 9 was more like 5 products each offering almost all the same things in a slightly format
3.) Macs can use virtual PC -- basically 90% of all the friviolous software from M$ will work. The other 10% basically are just like the other 90% anyway
4.) most *nix applications will work with a slight mod during make ... but isn't that the norm for compling software on a *nix machine
5.) M$ software runs better on the mac ... OFfice v.x seems to better on a mac than on doze <<< hehe M$ made their name first on the macs
6.) Yes, some of the major players are taking their time is seems (hmmm I bet XP is going through the same growing pains) ... sure photoshop is slow in coming ... but then again ... Adobe never had really coded for *nix
7.) I bet you'll never see Office on the latest version of redhat or mandrake !!!
8.) since it bsd based you now have any script available to use instead of a program!!!!
9.) webobjects ... simple as that.
10.) OSX --- the gui solution that many *nix distributions had hoped to find. KDE/Gnome are close but still have a way to go.
Anybody care to count all the available programs and scripts floating around today????
drawbacks to a Mac machine :::
1.) initial hardware investment --- YES costs more. But would you buy something if you knew how much you had to pay in the long term for running costs and lose of time due to bugs, viruses, almost daily system updates? Time does = money.
2.) It's a mac -- yep ... there's a chinese proverb .... Lao Tzu said, "A lowly scholar laughs at the TAO. If he did not, it would not be the TAO."
3.) some peripherals don't work properly or not at all ... ahhh life sucks but ... why did you buy a product that nobody has heard of before?
4.) browsers on OSX suck bad ... yep ... how true ... but then again it looks like some of you users have different but similar problems
5.) still problems with networking to other systems ... ahh we all have some kind of problem.
OK enough of the rant
--------
Evoir, take the plunge ... the worst part is learning to use a *nix enviornment -- you don't really need to learn the command line but .. there's so much unexplored territory coming from the mac world that I was overwhelmed with what you can do!!! It helped that I had been doing web work and playing around with GT scripts.
--------
Yeah, I heard that GT has a mac in the office ... wonder how old it is? probably a dinosaur which means that it's impression isn't that great.
-------
new 'i'Lampdstand -- is just that ... a iLamp with a cpu ... cool design but let's not forget ... most people here wouldn't benefit by owning one unless they had a nice office which had customers coming into regualarly ... which it would then make a great impression and save lot's of space on your desk.
I bet it'll go well in Japan since everybosy complains about not having enough space .... which is why notebooks and the imode cell phones are so popular.
If you're a power user / programmer I'd wait until the G5 tower makes it's debute ... the iLamp has a G4 processor (which is strange since only higher end models use the G4) meaning a new tower should coming out within 3+ months. Apple likes to offer new machines/products during their macworld conventions.

hmmm sorry for the long post and the rant but ... hehehe ... I'm human too.

Many of IBM's more exotic designs are still a year or more from markethmmm ... doing is the important thing.
Besides IBM is part of the AIM alliance -- sort of -- Apple IBM Motorola ... best CPU on the market!
then of course IBM has had rumors about deleting most of their PC lines anyways.
still it's nice to see a truly refreshing design on the market hope more companies become more original -- err not like the eone or sotec machines!

You forgot: 6.) You have to learn [markup tags] to use Gossamer Forum
Actually, we don't, but we did have a designer that was coming in regularly that we tested on. The fact that we don't have one may be part of the reason Alex is drooling over this new Mac. I wonder who's desk it would go on ...

The OSX server version runs circles around most standard *nix distros ... hmmm think doable SUN for home users!

I am trying to find this executable file that my friend sent me awhile back that will automatically change a PC into a Mac (earlier OS, of course). I thought it was one of those emulators, but it was different...and scary.
It was freaky when I clicked on the attachment, and my whole deskop changed to a MAC.
YIKES!

Buh Bye!
Cheers,
