IBM Unveils Fastest-Ever 110 GHz Processor
Posted by waddy on Tuesday, February 26 @ 10:35:54 GMT (37 reads)

LightWave writes "International Business Machines Corp. said on Monday it has built the world's fastest microchip, which will enable communications systems to run far more quickly.

The integrated circuit runs at more than 110 GigaHertz, or 110 billion cycles per sec.

The new integrated circuit is based on silicon germanium chip-making technology. Most chips, such as the microprocessors that are the brains of computers, are made out of silicon, a base material that acts as a semiconductor.

The chip that previously held the record for speed, can run at up to 80 GigaHertz.

IBM said it expects its 110 GigaHertz chip to be available by the end of the year.

no that's right.
I saw the same headline at a favorite headline site I visit often.

Funny thing though was that the link directly above was a link to an article saying that Intel predicts CPU speeds reaching 20 ghz by 2017 Laugh

but I'm sure that the 100 ghz IBMs are for the super server lines ... ala Cray and such.

hehe ... AIM alliance = Apple IBM Motorola .... hehe no Intel

Ah yeah. The story on Yahoo! is a bit misleading, though. It's not exactly a chip initself.
