Calling 56k dialup person for test
Would someone mind doing a very quick page load time test for me? (56k modem only)

Just let me know the seconds and your rough location (continent), I would very much appreciate it.

The test url is http://www.iuni.com/custom

Edit: My best guess is 18 seconds from within North America

Thanks... but sounds like you are on DSL or Cable Wink

I would rarely put a graphic this big on a page... but I wanted to in this case... so I am just curious how restrictive using graphics this large really is to our dial-up freinds, and/or people from other continents?

My grandmother thats a nice connection.

Maybe I should not be worried about connection times... since most people on here probably have fast connections (and that is who these pages are aimed at). I just though I should not assume this though.

Yes, a DSL. Thats why I chuckled!

If you are worried about load time split the graphic into 6 or 8 slices. It will load faster and maintain the quality.Wink

I think I have the same connection as Paul. Fast for me too.

Ian, are you using 3D Studio Max or Lightwave 3D?

Well since everyone seems optic fibre fast around here, there might not be a need to split the graphic... but good idea.

TSL: I use povray (which has been described as like C++ by someone I know), paint shop usually. But I have used 3DS for somethings. (who can afford 3D Studio right?)

Europe, 56k dialup modem: about 15 seconds.... (too much, I would not have waited if you hadn't asked).

Thanks Ivan, perfect! Thats what I wanted to know.

EDIT: I must try cutting it, to see what difference that makes.... I want to make a portfolio of my graphics on this site, but this would be thumbnail based. I would be nice if the front page had a high impact graphic though... so this is a nice test for me.

I broke the image into 6 slices, I wonder if that makes the load any less painful... I can't see how it would be much faster, but thats what the tutorials say anyways.

When I click refresh with a cable connection, you just barely see the individual images load on at a time... about 1/4 second... no good for testing.

Why don't you try forcing the image to load before the page shows.

This may give you a better idea. As well, it seems that there is a grey field behind the image. Try making that area with no color. This will make it slightly faster as well.Smile

35 seconds with a 56K Flex connection, although I only connect at 28.8 due to the aged multi-plexers in my neighborhood. They are going to be replacing all the multi-plexers (basically telecom routers) in my neighborhood by late 2003.

Of course, the majority of your customers are probably on higher connection rates, so mine is probably an anominally.

Hi, thanks for the info. I guess there are not to many grahpic oriented site who cater to less than 56 k these days. Must be frustating, though it is frustrating for the designer also.

There are sites which only cater to 128k + these days, and you quickly forget just what dial up is like when you have not used it for a while. I used it a little last year while I was traveling... it was like television in black & white.

thanks

Not really...while my home computer (Win95b, 16bit color, 28.8 internet connection, with limited plugins for browsers) is archaic and frustrating to use at times, it is a nice "reality check" to make sure that the Internet technologies I design and develop are accessible for a wide variety of users.

There has to be a limit as to how much compatibility you strive for....you could go on and on due to how many different variations of pc, graphics cards, etc there are but it would be unrealistic, overly time consuming and impractical.

I feel the best is to design for your target market.

For example, if I were targeting the retired market I would build fast loading pages at 56K due to the heavy use of dial up within the retired persons community. This of course is changing but at a very slow rate.

Just target your designs in general for your audience and you get the best results.

I agree and that is what I do. About 30% of traffic to my web site comes from rural areas in "foreign" countries. Many of these end users are ex-patriates working abroad and they pay a pretty penny for internet access, which for many of them is quite slow, between 20 - 33 kbps.

Thus having an archaic system and testing and developing pages on it ensures that this segment of my user base are able to access the site.
