I would advise it; can't hurt. Links.db is the most essential to have backed up, and it probably couldn't hurt to backup categories.db, as well. For that matter, all the data files are pretty small, so if you back up one, why not back up 'em all (I only do links.db regularly).
That said, if you don't add links all that often, don't worry about backing up. The build options do an automatic backup if one hasn't been done that day. The problem I had arises when a backup HAS been done that day, then you add more links, then the database crashes on a subsequent build. In this case, you will lose info unless you saved the database to your hard drive.
