I haven't used 1and1 myself, so can't really say anything about their servers. I assume your best bet would be to call their support/sales department and ask them if they would allow you to these things.

I myself having been using Burst/Nocster (www.nocster.com) for almost 3 years now, and my experience with them has been really great. Their rates are even better than 1and1 and they also have good support. Also, on my server I am running Links SQL without any problem, so I don't think you would be having any problem either.

I would still like to add this, from what I have heard about GT.. their servers are really great and GT staff knows that they are doing, so their support especially for thier own products would be next to none.
