Is there a way to add smilies to HTML editor of GM?

I am thinking:

Upload smilies to server
Add smiles to top of HTML editor in drop down menu
Add javascript that inserts location of selected smilie (i.e its url) at cursor location in text message

Any idea how to incorporate the above? This is a highly requested feature and is already implemented by yahoo and hotmail

Also...

It is possible to prevent abuse by others linking to our smilies in their emails? I do not want to drain server resources
