Is anyone aware of a mod that would let emulate the alpha bar style category listings of dmoz etc?

I'd like to try this out but in such a way as can be set per induvidual category level, say through browse in admin?

Hope that makes sense, had a good rummage through forum but dont seem to be finding any relevant info :(
