Locking a thread makes it so that no one else can reply to the thread, and a small lock appears in the forum listing to indicate that the thread is locked.

"Keeping" a thread makes it so that the thread will not be deleted if you decide to use the admin function to remove old posts, even if it is older than then number of days entered.
