Steps to build a profitable directory

Steps to build a profitable directory
I would like to use Links SQL to build a directory, what are the basic "1-2-3...." steps to follow? eg.

1. buy Links SQL (ok - obvious)
2. buy dedicated server hosting (little less obvious - but can see that using Gossamer hosting as option)
3. set up Links SQL (now need some advice - tips)
4......find / add links (and more advice...)
5. ......how to make the directory pay, "paid for inclusion" ? PPC?
6. ........any help advice appreciated
7. ................can a Links SQL directory compeet with the "big guns"?
