I agree Jagerman, I hadn't thought about the negative side of the voting system 
. But taking this point into account it would be possible to be only able to say "I love it" and hence enabling the system to bring out very interesting messages.
In this way it wouldn't be a system that would say "your message is rubbish" but rather single out messages to say "this is a great message".
It is a way of letting people interact and help indicate where there is good content. This is a function that on Amazon leads to a list of top reviewers. This enables you go through their reviews that for the top reviewers are often good quality. I suppose you may say that other people may feel left out but then you can't love everybody's messages. And as you say it should be something that you can switch on in the admin area, depending on the type of web site/forum.
I for one, would like to see messages that my friends find interesting and from a general point of view messages that get the 'four stars' from most members...
