I'm a brand new user, so this may or may not help you... sorry if I'm way off here...

Under Admin -> Setup -> Search Options there is the following option:

"Use the indexed search engine or regular search engine. The indexed search engine is quicker on very large databases, however it is only useable if your data can be broken up into words by spaces (i.e. it doesn't work with big5/gd text).
search_indexed... o Indexed o Regular"

I'm not sure how this works, but it looked like it might be relevant to your problem.
