It would be possible...however, not a scalable solution. I would not want to invest the effort into a writing a Mod that would end up crashing.
BTW: Amazon, Yahoo, and Snap use Vignette, which is a robust personalization engine that costs around $250,000 for one site license. In addition, the back-ends in these sites are using a combination of Oracle and Java.
